Parents of medical students face £15,000 debt.
The BMA (British Medical Association) has published the results of its latest Medical Student Finance survey. Two-thirds of medical students rely on financial support from parents during their studies and are given an average of £15,000 over a 5 year course. Students qualify with an average debt of nearly £23,000. There are concerns that such levels of parental support and student debt mean that studying medicine is not an option for lower-income families. The BMA report shows that only 5% of students are from the lowest two (of six) income groups.
