Incidence of type-1 diabetes in childhood rising.
A study published in The Lancet shows that the incidence of Type-1 diabetes in childhood has been rising and is likely to continue to rise. The study analysed 20 different population based registers in 17 European countries.  They all had over 90% case ascertainment and many had over 99% ascertainment. All but two registers showed significant yearly increases in the incidence of type-1 diabetes in children.  The authors of the study predict a doubling of new cases of type 1 diabetes in European children younger than 5 years between 2005 and 2020, and that prevalent cases younger than 15 years will rise by 70%.  Although the study was unable to analyse the possible explanations behind such a rise it did conclude that there were significant implications for health care provision.
