Large increase in measles cases in England and Wales.
Latest figures from the Health Protection Agency show the highest number of recored cases of measles in England and Wales since monitoring was introduced in 1995.

Up to the end of October there were 1049 cases recorded in 2008 surpassing the 990 for the whole of 2007. The rise in cases is attributed to the poor uptake of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Public confidence in the vaccine was undermined by the dicredited report by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues linking the vaccine to autism.
