New Study Considers Recurrence Rates for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). |
|
Campell et al report a novel approach to estimating the risk of recurrence of sudden infant death syndrome (or "cot death") in the same family.
Answering this question has proved controversial, especially in relation to recent legal cases. It is certainly incorrect just to square the probability of a single SIDS to obtain the probability of two successive SIDS since the events are not independent. This new study published in Archives of Disease in Childhood uses data from CESDI (Confidential Enquiry into Stillbirths and Deaths in Infancy) to simulate cohorts with varying prevalances of risk factors and shows the importance of considering environmental factors when investigating the risk of recurrence of SIDS.
