One of the stated main aims of the editors of the book was to provide rapid access to a broad base of paediatric knowledge. They have certainly met this aim with a very wide coverage of paediatrics. It is difficult to think of an area of paediatrics that is not covered. In keeping with the subtitle, "Just the Facts", this book has had to ration "extraneous" material in order to keep the wide coverage but also keep the book a manageable size and not turn it into a "reference tome". The main area of rationing is in the use of illustrations. There are very few illustrations (mainly diagrams, even fewer clinical photographs), although those that are present are clear and enhance the adjoining text.
As the book highlights on its cover it makes extensive use of bullets giving it the feel of revision notes rather than flowing text. This does make it very easy to find the information you are after. The book has a huge number of contributing authors with each of the 193 subsections written by an expert in the field. This could have potentially led to inconsistencies in style between different areas of the book but the editors have done a splendid job of keeping the layout and style consistent throughout, facilitating navigation through the book. Another area of excellence in this book that facilitates navigation is the index which is very accurate and has lots of subdivisions to ensure you find what you want (e.g. Shock - diagnosis of; diagnosis of septic; empiric antibiotics; guidelines for treatment of; etc). A great inclusion on the inside back cover is a sub-index of "Common Office Complaints" that lists the pages of common paediatric problems such as diarrhoea, seizures, and eczema. This helps you to find the most commonly met conditions even faster than the main index.
UK students should note that this book is written by authors and editors from the USA. This should not present a significant problem for UK students although beware that units may be different (e.g. blood glucose measure in mg/dl instead of mmol/l more commonly used in the UK).
Summary : A paediatric textbook with exceptional scope and coverage written in a bulleted format with few illustrations to keep the book a reasonable size for undergraduates.
