Evidence from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows that the number of cases of invasive pneumococcal disease is falling since the introduction of the pneumococcal vaccine.
In a release by the Department of Health news that in the short period since the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine was introduced into the UK immunisation schedule in the second half of 2006 there has been a significant reduction in the number of cases of invasive pneumococcal disease such as meningitis, septicaemia and severe pneumonia. The results of the vaccine are shown in a dramatic fashion in a graph produced by the HPA.
