Study shows inactivity may not cause fatness. |

Data from the EarlyBird study shows that being fat leads to inactivity but inactivity DOES NOT lead to fatness.
The EarlyBird study is a longitudinal cohort study in South West England that has been running since 2000. A new publication from this study provides insights into the relationship between fatness and physical inactivity. There is overwhelming data showing that physical inactivity and obesity are associated. It is widely assumed that physical inactivty causes obesity. However, most studies can only demonstrate ASSOCIATION but are not able to infer CAUSALITY. The new paper published in Archives of Disease in Childhood shows that whilst fatness leads to physical inactivity, inactivity does not lead to fatness.
This finding provides useful information for public health attempts to tackle the rising incidence of childhood obesity.
