Data from a Meningococcus B vaccine trial presented at the 17th International Pathogenic Neisseria Conference in Banff, Canada shows promising results.
Although a meningococcal group C vaccine introduced to the UK in 1999 has been very successful the majority of cases of meningitis in the UK are caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (Meningococcus B). Developing a vaccine against the B serotype has proven more difficult than for the C serotype but a phase 3 trial involving over 3600 infants showed that a new Meningococcal B vaccine provided robust immunity and acceptable tolerability when administered with other routine vaccines.
