Demand George Osborne stops supporting food speculation!
George Osborne, our disgusting chancellor, is doing all he can to stop the EU passing regulations on food speculation. Financial speculation on food has caused huge rises in the cost of staple foods such as soy, wheat and maize in recent years. World Development Movement are asking people to send a letter to George Osborne demanding he supports new controls on the practice. Have a look at their ?Real George? website now, the ?take action section is on the right.

Become a Medsin Regional Coordinator [DEADLINE EXTENDED]
If you are involved with your regional Medsin branch and have a bit more time to spare, or have finished a stint with your branch and are looking for something to fill the Medsin gap in your life, then this might be for you. Medsin regional coordinators exist to facilitate communication and cooperation between branches which are relatively close together. The positions can also be a stepping stone towards getting involved with the National Committee at a later date. The committment is flexible (so don't be put off if you can only give a little bit of time), and the roles are relatively new so you would have plenty of scope to explore your ideas (with the full support of the national network). The following positions are available in each region:
South-East (comprising UCL, KCL, Imperial, Barts, Cambridge, Southampton, St George's and Brighton)
- Events Coordinator
- Regional Coordinator
South-West (comprising Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Peninsula and Swansea)
Midlands (comprising Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, UEA, Oxford and Warwick)
- Events Coordinator
- Policy and Advocacy Coordinator
- Regional Coordinator
Northern (comprising Hull York, Keele, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield)
- Events Coordinator
- Regional Coordinator
Scottish (comprising Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Belfast)
For more information about what's involved with regional positions, please contact committee@medsin.org . To apply please submit a short statement of motivation (no more than 500 words) to nationalcoordinator@medsin.org , outlining your experience and what you hope to achieve as a regional coordinator. We are extending the application deadline to 23.59 on Sunday 22nd January 2012, so that people who might have missed the last newsletter over Christmas still have time to apply.

Get Involved with a Medsin National Working Group
Medsin has several NWGs, so if you have a particular interest in one of our areas of work, then this is the perfect way to get more involved. No previous experience is required, there is no minimum committment and the vast majority of the work is done over email - so nothing is stopping you...
Global Health Education NWG - works on topics ranging from getting more global health onto university curricula, to ethical electives, to developing our in-house GHE training. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Mike (Global Health Education Director) on ghe@medsin.org
Advocacy NWG - working on various campaigning issues both re-actively (to issues arising in the press and media) and pro-actively (to long term issues Medsin has identified as important campaigns). There are also opportunities to get more involved with specific campaigns, such as Medsin?s work on the Health and Social Care Bill. To join this group, contact Anya (Policy & Advocacy Director) on policies@medsin.org
Magazine NWG - we are producing an edition of the Medsin Magazine to be released in conjunction with the upcoming Global Health Conference at KCL in April. If you'd like to do some writing for this publication or would be interested in joining the editorial team then please contact nationalcoordinator@medsin.org
Two other ways you can get more involved with Medsin are by training to be a Medsin trainer or by joining an affiliated activity. Email training@medsin.org or activities@medsin.org to find out more about either of these!
