    So here's the deal.

I'm in my junior year and plan on applying this year to med school. My question is should I apply or look more into a post-bac then apply. My overall current overall GPA is a 3.167, and my science is roughly a 3.4-3.5. School is going well this quarter and looking like a 4.0 so I'm sure it will go up some. I didn't do so hot in two classes so I'm retaking them in the fall. When I replace the grades, my GPA will rise a little more. However, I'm not sure if it will show up due to the application deadlines.

I am taking the MCAT this summer and plan on getting high 30's. I have some research and clinical experience, as well as involvement in school (NCAA soccer and clubs). With that said, what chances do I have for admission?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    -Vic

Hey guys, I just had some questions for everyone. I just finished my second semester in a master's program. So far I've completed 30 semester unites with a 3.95. The problem is that my science undergrad was around a 2.9. When you do a masters to what extent does it "wipe the slate clean"? Do they still put more weight on your undergrad grades, will they combine everything, or if you graduate grades really are that much better will they take those as more of an indication of what your true abilities are? Thanks a lot.

Hi, I'm finishing up my sophomore year at a community college and I am seriously considering a postbacc program after I graduate since I don't think that my grades are not good enough. I went to a not so prestigious cal state school got a decent GPA (around a 3.7) and went to a local community college for my 2nd year. I will be transferring to UCLA next fall, but I took most of my medical-school prerequisites at the state school so I'm skeptical since they are known for their engineering program.

I also got a C in 2nd semester calculus, and a B- in my first quarter english class so I'm also worried that those will affect my admissions as well.

Here are my science classes so far (first grade is lecture and the second is the lab) :

    Biology 1: B+/A
    Biology 2: A-/A
    Biology 3: A/A-

    Chemistry 1: A-/A-
    Chemistry 2: A/A
    Chemistry 3: A/A

    Organic Chemistry 1: B
Organic Chemistry 2: have not taken yet

    Physics 1 (Algebra/Trig Based): B/B+
    Physics 2 (Algebra/Trig Based): A/A
    Physics 3 (Algebra/Trig Based): A-/B+

Calculus Based Physics for Scientists and Engineers:
    Physics (Mechanics): B
Physics (Fluids, Thermodynamics, Sound): Have not taken yet
Physics (Electricity and Magnetism): Have not taken yet
Physics (Optics, Modern Physics): Have not taken yet

    Calculus 1: A
    Calculus 2: C

If medical school is still possible (preferrably a California school) would I still be able to make it if I did well in my classes at UCLA?

    Thanks

I just got off the phone with the head of the residency program at a local hospital and he told me that foreign grads are immediately tossed... not even considered.

    Is this common?
How hard is it to get into a residency program?
How hard is it to get into a competitive program such as neurosurgery, orthopedics, physiatry?

    Hope someone knows.

Okay, so I'm getting ready to register for a September MCAT. I was wanting to know if, for whatever reason, a month before the exam I decide I'm not ready and that I want to cancel the exam: will I get a refund of my $210.00? I can't seem to find this info on the AAMC website.

So, I've heard lots of people (including myself) state that med schools will not accept AP credit for pre-req courses. This is apparently not the case (at least with some schools). For example, Texas Tech COM has this statement on their admissions website: "All graded prerequisite courses require a grade of "C" or better or AP credit." http://www.ttuhsc.edu/som/admissions/reqs.aspx.

Pretty much all of the Texas schools are uniform in their requirements, so at least for those applying in TX, AP credit seems to be a-okay for your pre-reqs. Does anyone have any information about any other schools and their AP-credit policies?

    Hey all,

I was given these two documents by the premed committee at my school (FAU in Boca Raton, FL). At this time I'm not officially in their premed program, but will go through the system to take advantage of the LORs and any relationships I can build with the staff. The main reason is, I want to attend University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and FAU is basically partnered with them. I am now Junior in my BA track and am prepping for '09 MCATs.

Anyway... here are 2 links to some presentation PPTs, one is a basic overview (for freshmen) but has a ton of general information about getting into med school. Document 2 has most of the same information with a little bit more detailed info.

Definately worth reading, I think these two files cover about 80% of the premed questions on here.

    Premed Presentation #1

    Premed Presentation #2

    Enjoy,
    Bat
